Garden Design

I just thought I’d share a few thoughts about my garden design as I haven’t done so yet on this site….

I view garden design as a reflection of nature, temporal, ever-evolving meeting the expressed and unexpressed needs of a client, bringing out the unique attributes of the site, in its natural and its local vernacular context. In its widest sense creating a enhanced unity, harmony and place – a genius-loci; and its simplest sense, meeting the practical needs of the Client.
We have a responsibility as designers to provide a long term success in environmental innovation in the use of contemporary and sustainable materials, adapted in a minimal form to suit the precise needs of the individual client and their unique environment.

Design should reflect the aspirations of my Client, those expressed and those not, and the constraints of the site, which should be expressed in terms of advantage not disadvantage.
Design should draw upon nature, in all its expressions of sound sight and smell, garden design is not static but dynamic changing with seasons, and over time.

As a designer I have many tools that I use to ensure my design is understood by the Client, its very important that I reflect back to them what I believe they want. I use the drawing board, sketch pad and software products such as Vectorworks 2008 Landmark and Photoshop, Illustrator I use my website to ensure they have access to all their details – knowing which is the best tool to use at any one time is an art in itself.

Ideas to Save Money

Each month I will provide a different facet of my business from saving money by insulating your property to introducing eco-friendly methods of creating energy to heat and light your house and very soon how also how to cool your house in summer, which may a be a real issue in a few years. I also will let you know about the available grants saving you even more money.

I can never understand why everyone wants the latest phone and yet still live in the ‘dark’ ages when it comes to their home, so I intend to start explaining how new technology can be embraced and used to make you and your family’s life so much easier and yes, less complicated. Just like your mobile phone, you don’t have to know how it works – but just how to use it.

A new year - a new focus

Links to help you start up your business

well last week I was busy trying to start to develop my web-site and that’s still on-going…….. but I promised to share with all those entrepeneurs like myself and that includes those of us who are over 50 – few links that I have found helpful!!

But the good news is if you, like me, are in our Prime, then there is a whole lot out there to help us – we’re not done yet you know!!

Having taken the decision to go it alone – that’s exactly how you feel  – all alone – but don’t because you’re not! You just haven’t found them yet and there a lot of them.

There’s the government backed agencies and associated sites and I think some are just in it for the ride – you soon realise there isn’t much happening around them, I won’t name and shame – they know who they are I will just tell you those I have found more than helpful:

http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/- business link if you only wanted one site then call here and at the moment all their courses are free and there’s loads of downloads

http://www.primebusinessclub.co.uk/ – come in all those over 50 cos this is the site for you!!

http://enterprisequest.com/ – great place to find useful information – some of it you get free from Prime so go there first!!

http://www.startupcommunity.co.uk/ – last but certainly not least if anyone has a personality within any of these organisations its Kate Moss – she has, well its probably not her directly, but she has given me loads of useful tips and some wonderful sites to go on

http://www.midessexenterpriseagency.co.uk/ – you will be met by the site isn’t up and running yet – bit of a let down for a governement or probably county run site – but I’m told a very useful organisation – I’m yet to have a meaningful conversation with them No apologies for it being Essex – I’m from Lancashire so there’s no favouratism – but there must be similar organisations in all areas and I’m sure through their phone line they will be able to put you in touch with them.

So there you go…..

oh and I’m forgetting the one that I was most surprised about but the HMRC – yes the HMRC are the most helpful organisation there is

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ – they organise courses and operate a very useful helpline and aren’t after taking every penny they can of you quite the contrary!!

I have to say I thought I would get loads of grants and I’m not saying there aren’t but not in the fields that I am going to operate in

So there you go my helping hand for what its worth to all you people who are the future, and start networking on all of the sites even Twitter!!

More from me next week………

So Much Help Around in Recessionary Times

Went on a HMRC course yesterday – I know not one of the most exciting events in my life – but the information given out to would-be entrepenuers was fantastic and of course good opportunity to network.
I know its not the popular thing to say but the government are really trying to help us in starting up ourselves especially those of us who are in our Prime. There are a whole load of courses run by Businesslink and similar organisations and at the moment they are all free. And they are all relevant and as I said before a great way to network.
I will be putting up as many links as I can for all those would-be venturers into new business, just to make it easier, but not today. Cos today Matthew I’m going to start to develop how my website should look and feel!

In at the deep end

Well at my time of life I should know better than to start afresh….. well that’s what half of me says and sometimes its more than half of me.
But then I was always up for a challenge and I needed that after my father died and I was made redundant. I sometimes describe the feeling as running on the hamster wheel and when you fall off you don’t know any better than to get back on.
Well this time I ain’t.
All my life I have had a passion for gardening and those that know me well in my work circles will probably be saying ‘what??!!’ yes gardening big time I know all the Latin names don’t ask me how, I go to as many gardens as I can and now I’m doing a garden design course.
My new business was just going to be garden design and then someone and not just someone, someone very special, said and what about doing up homes…. and I had to agree that’s another passion and one I have for more than twenty years devoted my life to.
Well that sets the scene…. I’m going to tell you how I get on in setting up my business warts and all and it just may help some people and if it does then that’s great.
I’m at the Prime of my Life and this is my Prime Initiative…….
